Like all appliances in your home, your BBQ should be cleaned regularly and maintained properly. To help ensure the longevity and functionality of what many consider to be one of their favourite household items, here are the things you should know about BBQ cleaning and maintenance.

How to Clean a BBQ

1. Start by switching off your BBQ and disconnecting the gas.If there is burnt food stuck on the grill grates and hot plates, scrape it off using a brush (this will be easier if the grill is still warm). Then, pop the grates and hot plates into the dishwasher.

2. The next step is to clean the inside and outside of the grill with warm, soapy water and a stiff brush. Afterwards, rinse the Teflon grill sheets. Don’t forget to clean the drip tray, as well!

3. Put the grill back together again by re-assembling the grill grates and hot plates. Then, replace the drip tray reposition the Teflon grill sheets, too. Once you’re done, reconnect the propane tank and ensure that there’s no leak by testing it with soapy water.

4. Run the grill on high for about 15 minutes to let the remaining soap or water evaporate. Afterwards, apply cooking oil to the grates and hot plates to re-season them.

BBQ Maintenance Tips

To ensure the longevity of your BBQ, follow these tips:

1. Clean Your Grill Every Year

Be sure to give your BBQ grill a thorough cleaning at least once every year. Before doing so, see to it that you refer to the care and maintenance section of your owner’s manual to avoid potential problems.

2. Carefully Handle The Burners

Always be careful when cleaning the burners. Unless some of the holes are clogged, don’t douse them with water. Simply wipe them clean. If the holes are clogged, you can use a small metal point to remove the blockage.

3. Always Preheat Your Grill

Before cooking, preheat the BBQ grill for at least 15 minutes. Not only will it burn off any residual dirt and kill germs on cooking surfaces, but it also makes meat more tender and juicy.

How Not to Clean a BBQ

Here are the things you shouldn’t do when cleaning your grill:

1. Don’t use Harsh Chemicals

Never use harsh chemicals to clean your grill because they often leave a residue that can affect the taste and smell of food. It can also damage the stainless or painted finishes on your grill.

2. Avoid Scratchy Brushes And Scrubbers

To avoid scratching smooth surfaces of your grill, use non-scratch scrubbers. It’s also a good idea to test a small area before starting to scrub!

3. Aluminium Foil Is Not Recommended

Never use aluminium foil to trap heat and cook food faster. While it does work, it is potentially dangerous, and most BBQ manufacturers advise against this practice.
