Of course the experienced tradie will know his circular saw from his reciprocating saw, his impact driver drill from his hammer driver drill. But what if you’re just starting out? Or maybe you’re one of our DIY mum’s keen to tackle a few jobs around the home. How do you know which power tool is best for the job? We’ve put this list together to give an overview of some common power tools and their applications.

Power Tools: The Essentials

Drills

Hang a shelf, build a deck or put up those picture frames you’ve still got lying around with a cordless drill. All drills have slightly different specifications, but the most common are

  • Drill drivers (ideal for driving in screws and boring holes in plaster, wood, metal and plastics)
  • Hammer drills (hammer action makes drilling holes quicker – stone, concrete and masonry)
  • Impact drivers (a powerful drill that drives screws faster with better control. Perfect for wood and metal.)

Angle Grinder

This versatile tool  grinds, cuts, sands, polishes and sharpens. Some common DIY applications include cutting tile, sharpening mower blades and cleaning garden tools.

An angle grinder can be dangerous, so only use one if you are confident you know what you are doing. Safety equipment is essential. Always use eye and hearing protection and some applications may require you to use a dust mask or face shield.

Circular Saw

This popular power saw makes deep, straight lines in a range of materials. Most commonly used to cut timber boards down to exact sizes and trim decking boards. Can also be used on plywood and MDF to make precise cuts. You can adjust the blade to make different depths of cut. Look for a model with a dust extraction port.

Sander

Anyone who has had to hand sand anything knows how labour intensive it is. A cordless sander makes light work of smoothing surfaces. There are different types of sanders including orbital sanders, detail sanders, belt sanders and buffer and polishers. Talk to the experts at Ison & Co who can advise you which sander is best for your requirements.

Multi-function Tool

As the name suggests, these handy tools have many capabilities. Scrape grout away from tile, sand a floor, remove sealant and much more with a multi-tool. The best thing about multi-function tools is their ability to get into areas that other tools can’t with just a quick adjustment of the blade position.
